20M RUN

AEROBIC FITNESS CHALLENGE

How many 20 metre laps can you complete in 5 minutes?

The 20m Run is a simple, easy to administer, reliable, valid and discriminating test of aerobic fitness for children, ‘regular folks’, elite force personnel and athletes.

Based loosely on the well known ‘beep test‘ of aerobic fitness, all that participants have to do is to see how many times they can walk, shuffle, jog or run between two lines 20m apart in 5 minutes.

This is a test of aerobic fitness that people can do at any time to check how metabolically fit they are.

It’s the test that should be included in all medical assessments of metabolic function, particularly for people who are over weight and out of shape, those with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure and people who are depressed.

For adults, the record number of laps so far (November 2023) is 60 laps for men and 55 for women. People in poor condition will struggle to get 20 laps. The lowest score recorded is 9 laps in 5 minutes. This makes the 20m run a discriminating test of aerobic fitness - much more discriminating than the beep test.

SCHOOLS CLASS CHALLENGE

The 20m run challenge is open to school classes as a key feature of a program to drive 'fitness' into the frontline of physical education.

By taking part in the challenge classes will be able to see how they rank with like-minded classes throughout Australia.

The test is an integral part of a school's fitness program with the results of the test being included in the report card of every school student from grade 4 up.

The challenge involves teachers registering their classes, at 20mrun.com then entering the average score of the class each time they do the test and then watch where the class ranks with other classes throughout Australia.
